My kids and I love looking at pictures of the universe. We scrunch up our eyes and just try to comprehend just how big God is.... Nope. Can't do it! My brain just can't seem to stretch that far! How do we get our heads around just how huge and immeasurable God is....
Even more mind-boggling is the fact that the Creator of this universe, instigator of all life is not far away, seated on some celestial throne, He is intimately involved in every area of our lives. He has walked amongst us!
When I read statistics like these, my brain really starts to melt out of my ears in awe:
- one million Earths could fit inside the Sun
- one billion Earths could fit inside just one of Saturn's rings
- your body contains over 60,000 miles of blood vessels - enough to go round the Earth twice
- your body also contain 7 octillion atoms, compared to a 'measly' 300 billion stars found in the galaxy
The kids laugh at me when I holler 'thank you Jesus!' when I find a parking space at a busy mall. I'm only half-joking when I declare this despite knowing full well that finding me a convenient parking space isn't very high on God's agenda for the expansion of the Kingdom, because it still reminds me that God is right there with me, driving to the shops, looking for a space. He's right there when I'm folding laundry or commuting to work or answering emails. I'm not always consciously focused on Him, but He is there. He is with me. Not only is He with me. He is for me.
One of my favourite songs right now is 'Jesus At The Center' which contains the line 'From my heart to the heavens, Jesus be the center, it's all about You, yes it's all about You'... From your heart (with it's ability to generate enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles a day with the beats produced just keeping you alive!) to the incredible heavens stretched out around us (decorated with over 300 billion unique stars) - JESUS is at the very center of it all.
In Colossians 1 verse 16-17, one of my most favourite scriptures states; "For in Him all things were created, things in Heaven and on Earth, things visible and invisible whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together".
Wow! Doesn't that just take your breath away? How can 'all things' be created through Jesus Christ? Because, remember, Jesus is the personification of the WORD of God - and God SPOKE life into existence. Oh my. The power of words. But I'll save that train of thought for another blog post!
It is clear from scriptures that God is right behind us, beside us, He goes before us and He is all around us with His shepherding hand of direction, protection and guidance. He is deeply involved in our lives. Do you realise that? He has counted the number of hairs on your head. He knows the very make-up of your unique DNA from over 7 billion other souls alive on Earth right now, and including the many millions of souls that have lived before us.
He knows your thoughts before you can even articulate them. He knows your needs before you even ask. Yet we pray as if He is far away. Sometimes we make God fit our limited imaginations rather than surrendering in wonder to the magnitude of who He is. Sometimes - we make God small. We make Him routine when He is infinitely creative. We make Him changeable when He is unchanging. We make Him reluctant to bless when He is desparately reaching out. We make Him remote and sombre when He rejoices over us with singing!
We ask God for things tentatively as if we have to sell the idea first. We imagine that the bills paid and the larder full is the very most that we could dare ask God to do for us - and yes, sometimes that takes more faith than we feel we have. But I want you to dare to believe God for more.
Dare to visualise your prayers from God's point of view, zooming in on your need.. Imagine you are up there in the Heavens with Him - seeing from His point of view over all the universe, the planet, your continent, your country, your neighbourhood, your house, your room, to the very chair or spot you're standing in right now ~ seeing right into the heart of you.

This is our God. So inexplicably enormous ~ yet so intimately involved with each and every single life. He knows you. He knows everything about you. Everything you've ever done, said or thought and everything still to come. You can trust Him with it all. You cannot shock Him, you cannot disappoint Him and you cannot outrun Him. Wherever you go - He is there. Stop running, reach up your hands and surrender to Him; Creator, Lord of all, and lover of your very soul.
